Benfica Lead Race For R52m Bafana Star
Benfica Are The Favourites To Land Bongani Zungu If He Does Leave Guimaraes
Vitoria de Guimaraes’ South African, Bongani Zungu, may have some choices to make shortly, with the R52m-rated midfielder a wanted man at present.
After putting a difficult start in Europe behind him, the 24-year-old has flourished in the Portuguese Primeira Liga this year, putting in a number of fine performances for Pedro Martins since being given a starting berth.
His showings have, as previously reported, attracted interest from all over Europe and his club moved quickly to try and tie him down on a long-term deal as potential suitors began to look on.
The Siya crew revealed last week that Guimaraes were looking for around €3.5m (R52m) for Zungu if they were to even consider selling him at this stage, however, it is known that they are eager to try and keep him on as they prepare for next season’s UEFA Europa League.
Now, as explained in today’s issue of Soccer Laduma, the crew have been informed that it is Benfica leading the way to sign Zungu if Guimaraes do opt to sell, a team who – interestingly, he will face in the Taca de Portugal final on Sunday.
Zungu, who will be hoping for a Bafana call-up this week, does still have over a year left to run on his contract with his current employers. He is happy in Guimaraes and despite the interest, will be fully focused on trying to land his first piece of silverware in Europe over the weekend.
However, once the game is over and the former Mamelodi Sundowns man begins to look to the future, he will have to decide whether to put pen to paper with Guimaraes or see where his club stands with regards to making some money on him.
