The Englishman, who was announced as the new head coach of the South African national team this month, is trying to maintain a balancing act between club and country at present, with both Bafana and SuperSport in action this month.
Baxter was on the sidelines as Matsatsantsa clinched a spot in the Nedbank Cup final over the weekend, but has now put his national team hat on and is focusing on picking the strongest squad available for next month’s encounter with the Super Eagles.
Having made the trip to Sudan earlier this year against the advice of British Embassy, Baxter will have been reluctant to let his team leave without him today, however, has decided that taking the time to select his Bafana squad has to take precedence at this point.
The former Kaizer Chiefs head coach is expected to name his full squad for the African Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday ahead of the game on the second week of June, but his club side has three matches to play between now and then, starting with tomorrow night’s CAF Confederation Cup game against CF Mounana.
Baxter will be back on the sidelines as he retakes the reigns from Kaitano Tembo next weekend for SuperSport’s final game of the Absa Premiership season. They are still in with a chance of finishing inside the top four for the first time since 2012.
