Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has faced many of football’s greatest players and now revealed his greatest ever opponent.

The 37-year-old just reached his second Champions League semi-final and believes that Brazil legend Ronaldo was the greatest player he has ever faced.

Buffon faced Ronaldo during El Fenomeno's spells with Inter and Milan in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and believes the three-time FIFA World Player of the Year could have reached the level of Pele and Diego Maradona.

“Ronaldo is the best I have ever played against,” Buffon told DailyMail.

“If it wasn’t for injury I think he would be talked about on the same level as Pele and Diego Maradona.”

Ronaldo scored an incredible 352 goals in 518 career games and won almost every trophy with club and country.

However, the Brazilian is one of the few world-class stars to have never won the Champions League.

Buffon, meanwhile, has made 418 appearances for Juventus since becoming the world’s most expensive goalkeeper after joining from Parma for €49.2 million in 2001.

Do you think Ronaldo was one of the most prolific strikers in football? Have your say in the comments section below.
