FIFA U20 World Cup

Result: Nigeria U20 2-4 Brazil U20

Date: 1 June 2015

Strings of mistakes by the defenders and goalkeeper cost Nigeria as they crashed 4-2 to Brazil in the FIFA U20 World Cup in a thrilling encounter at the Tekarani Stadium.

Gabriel broke the deadlock in the 4th minute, placing the ball into the net after a good move.

Isaac Success equalised in style just six minutes later, though, slotting the ball into the net after good work from Kelechi Iheanacho.

Alef had a chance to restore his team's advantage on eighteen minutes, but he was denied by goalkeeper Joshua Enaholo who pulled a one-handed save.

Just a minute later, Judivan tested Enaholo with a screamer towards the top corner, but the Nigerian goalkeeper was able to dive at full stretch.

Having successfully seen out a spell of constant pressure from Brazil, Nigeria took the lead.

Musa Yahaya placed the ball into the bottom-left corner to net his first goal of the competition.

Judivan, who was a constant threat to the Nigerians in the first half, was gifted a goal in the 34 minute.

The ball watching defenders allowed space for a pass to be sliced to the path of Judivan, who rolled the ball into the net.

At the beginning of the second half, the reigning African Champions were quick out of the blocks with their fluid passing game.

Taiwo Awoniyi who had an average game was denied by Brazil goal tender Jean.

One minute before the hour mark, Brazil took the lead once again.

It was substitute Boschilia with the goal. His speculative strike from long range sneaked past Enaholo.

Nigeria pressed for an equalizer and almost got it when Iheanacho went on a solo run. It was his last contribution of the match as he made way for Kingsley Sokari fifteen minutes from time.

The South Americans finally nailed the Africans in the 82nd minute.

Judivan profited from another criminal error by Enaholo to complete an impressive brace.

With this latest result, Nigeria are yet to beat Brazil in five attempts at U20 cadre.

How they started:

Flying Eagles Starters: Joshua Enaholo, Musa Mohammed (c), Mustapha Abdullahi, Zaharadeen Bello, Wilfred Ndidi, Ifeanyi Ifeanyi, Ifeanyi Matthew, Musa Yahaya, Isaac Success, Kelechi Iheanacho, Taiwo Awoniyi

Reserves: Dele Alampasu, Ojo Olorunleke, Izu Omego, Chidiebere Nwakali, Idowu Akinjide, Bernard Bulbwa, Godwin Saviour, Chidera Ezeh, Kingsley Sokari, Moses Simon

Nigeria U-20 has already qualified for the 2nd round so the match against Hungary is a matter of choosing the opponent we prefer to meet in the 2nd round...

Tanks @Emmy. My brother, you are correct. I couldn't believe the emotions/anger that took over me after the game; having been convinced that we lost a winnable match. I had to apply caution, else, my Monday was almost messed up. Meanwhile, I came to realize that, due to Super eagles' poor showings, we've all channeled all our love to the flying eagles and that was why the loss was very painful. Nevertheless, I still feel the team will do well but my greatest fear is, for a team like flying eagles that doesn't know how to lose, I hope they handle it well. As per Mustapha, let's just assume it was a bad day in office, if not, I hope there's an alternative for him, that is incase he fails to cope when other teams try to experiment from his wing again because it will surely happen, they will test him again. Ndewo my brother @Emmy.

@123ejiro our coaches would learn their lesson in a bitter way someday. No country on earth looks away their best legs and expect opponents at the World Cup would allow them to win because their long time regulars need to play and get a club too. Just check out how massive Elohor is combine him with Kingsley Madu and Ola aina these are boys who have experience and had played at big stage! Their appearance alone would scare the opponents not to talk of their skills. Nigerians are odd people!!! Imagine Amuneke inviting players on the pages of news paper , no contact with club or players even when the players are obvious talents and had signified to join the u17, just because he want to have a share in their "fat" contracts when his hopeless set of players luckily "shines" at the World Cup. As if giving him the u17 is a form of "egunje" reward by the NFF. Imagine Obuh saying he never "throws away his own" even when Stanley okoro was vividly messing up Nigerian opportunity to make history for his selfish play on field! Do u want to talk about keshi?........Manu would eternally regret closing his eyes to defensive options if he exits this tournament without a good medal!

@jasmin...good analysis..mustapha was overloaded on that left side. he should have taken one striker out to compensate for the overload on the left...me thinks if hes gonna be playing with 2 strikers, he better have a good ball winner in the middle that can stop the opponents from playing..

Everybody chill. That match against Brazil was a beautiful game of football. We lost because of many factors; (1)Manu Garba's openness. Manu doesn't know how to play mind games. He says it the way he feels. Saying during the pre-match that he was sure of winning must have brought out the demons in the Brazilians thus wanting to prove a point. There are cases a coach needs to fend weakness while planning to unleash surprises on the opponent. (2)Luck: we all need this in every endeavours of life. Had Nigeria gone 3-1 up in the first half with those misses from Awoniyi and Kelechi, it would have been a different ball game altogether. Our boys were already gaining in confidence at 2-1 and the 3rd goal would have changed the outcome of the game. (3)Information advantage: It was obvious the Brazilian coach has a good knowledge of our team, how they play and the possible weaknesses. Remember Manu had been in charge since the U-17 and his style is there for all to see. On the other hand, the Brazilian coach was just appointed few weeks ago and making it impossible for Manu to know what to expect from the tactician. This showed in the first half as Brazil kept exploiting our delicate short passing style at the defensive midfield area. Their crowding of Ifeanyi and Matthew each time they had the ball made both players jittery thus exposing the defense. Also, the Brazilian coach knows the penchant of our full-backs to join the attack, hence he kept them bizzy at the back all through. On the process too, they discovered a weak Mustapha which they exploited to the fullest. (4) Lack of respect from our coach: If Manu had respected the Brazilians, having seen the first half, methinks, he should have withdrawn one of the strikers for a midfielder/strong marker as to reduce the forays of the Brazilians through our midfield. (5)Tactical superiority of the Brazilian bench. The same respect I previously talked about resurfaced here. At second half, the Brazilian bench saw how talented our attack was and decided not to allow them space, thus they chose to defend massively and catch us on counter. Each time they do this, there is always a gap between our attack/attacking midfield and the defense/defensive mildfield thus exposing our-once-known-compact team. (6)Finally, there wil be a rematch of this game either at the Semis or the finals. Just relax, the team is still loaded enough to advance in the tournament and possibly win the trophy.

There is no need of crying over split milk. The deed is done. We should have started preparing for the next game by now: I believe. The contest was won and lost by the coaching crew of both countries. Simple. Sir Manu Garba, did nothing wrong with his selection because the set of players that played out a 2-2 draw, in the 1st half were used for 2nd half probably without any clear cut instructions. Brazil won, deservingly but Nigeria, were on the day, unlucky. The Brazilian's 1st goal was clearly off side. The right full back was off side - on receiving the ball before laying the assist 4 the 1st goal. Calls against us were questionable and frustrated our players. The most motivated players on our side during the game were subbed - the displeasure was all but apparent on their faces because they wanted to do more. The solution would have been to solidify the middle more because that was where the Brazilians' strength was. The 3rd goal, could have beaten even Enyeama. The ferocious shot took a ever so slight, deflection and skew, inwards on hitting the wet surface consequently it bounced off the inside of the post for goal. The 4th was simply a gift direct result of the elements. However, all these doesn't take away the facts; Brazil did JUST enough to win, by utilizing what Sir Manu understands, deploying "INFORMATION AGAINST FORMATION."

The coach should just accept that a big mistake in his selection again the talented brazilian. ..dropping Idowu Akinjide in to accommodate more attacker was his great mistake..immediately i saw the starting line up, i know there’s going to be problem and in which we eventually lost the game…it’s never too late and thank God it happens in the group stage. ..i hope he has learnt his lesson..blaming the goalkeeper or the players is not the issue. . He should take responsibility and correct himself. I strongly believe in the team. .We are going to qualify by God grace. ..up flying eagles

Superb in the first half. However, silly mistakes cost us the game in the second half. Why is Awoniyi laughing and smiling when he missed five goals? Where is Dele Alampasu? Is kelechi ready to play ball?

@emmy That would be a great combination. More Importantly, our coaches need to learn how to adjust to the flow of the game. Garba did not do that in this game. The Brazilian players weren't that much better than our guys, their coaching staff was better, they read the game and made adjustments to counter what we were doing. That was the difference.

@emmy 2 things Ive said on this forum. one after the selection of 35 players, and the other, before the brazil game.. let me repeat them. I had said the likes of Ekpolo and co should have been added to that list to give Musa Mohammed and co a fresh competition. Instead of inviting the same set of boys resulting on the same predictable names -- a waste of screening exercise. 2, The Brazil game would be won in the defence and goalkeeping department. Brazil are good shooters, we would have to choke up our midfield to prevent them from shooting at us. We failed to that, and see how the 2nd half played out. Again, the side with the better defense and goal keeping won -Brazil. Manu is used to winning, but for once he is faced with a situation where he needs to find solutions when we are at a disdvantage during the game. I think we should have rather started rather cautiously in that game and killed it in the 2nd half. I would rather have played a 3-5-2., with 3 central defenders.. and 3 solid midfielders.. with Musa and Mustapha playing their usual roaming roles down the flanks. Again, Sokari should have started. Manu should have kept to his words by slowly integrating Iheanacho, Simon, and Success. Although the latter's goal was class, he can do better on a usual day.

Starting Ifeanyi Ifeanyi in that Brazil game was a bad idea, the stage fright was there. I said prior to the game that Nwakali & Idowu has been in high pressure WC before, same cannot be said of Ifeanyi ifeanyi. His game style is good for African football, but with stage fright against Brazil, he is a toast.

@akassi, when Super Eagles showed guts and lost to Argentina with Messi they were praised. When they played Super chicken football and lost to Congo and Uganda at home, they deserved the insults. They all deserved slaps for that ugly and shambolic display in the loss to Sudan. Note against Brazil, it was a very beautiful game. We are still proud of our boys
