Defending champions England got their European Under 17 Championship off to a winning start with a hard fought 1 - 0 victory over Italy U17s on Thursday evening.

Manager John Peacock named the prolific Leicester City forward Layton Ndukwu in his starting line-up while Tayo Edun and Chelsea's Ike Ugbo made the 18-man squad.

Fulham defender Tayo Edun was the only Anglo - Nigerian player that was not given game time at Stadion Lazur, Burgas, with the coach introducing Ike Ugbo in place of Stephy Mavididi in the 64th minute.

As for the usually prolific Layton Ndukwu, he was subbed out just before the start of the second half , and failed to increase his haul to 7 international goals for the England Under 17s.

The 16-year-old's replacement, Marcus Edwards of Tottenham Hotspur, went on to score the match-winner in the 47th minute.

Ike Ugbo came close to increasing the lead nine minutes from time when he fired into the side netting after picking up a loose ball.

After match day one in Group D, England lead the way with three points ahead of Holland and Republic Ireland, who both have on point following their goalless draw in Sozopol.
