Germany Under 20 Star Rejects Nigeria

Germany Under 20 Star Kevin Akpoguma Turns His Back On Nigeria

Hoffenheim defender, Kevin Akpoguma, will reject an invitation to play for Nigeria's youth teams as he is an integral member of Germany's Under 20 squad.

Akpoguma, whose mother is German, has been given a chance to display his wares to coach Samson Siasia at the Under 23 national team screening exercise.

The Nigeria Football Federation are doing the groundwork to convince the defender to turn out for Nigeria instead of Germany, and Germany - based Darlington Omodiagbe, a member of  the Technical Study Group, has been pressurizing the player.

The retired Nigeria Under 23 international, now a youth team coach at SV Wacker Burghausen, did not bring good news in that regard when he contacted SL10.ng on Tuesday afternoon.

''I have talked to Kevin Akpoguma, we still have work to do to convince him to play for Nigeria,'' Darlington Omodiagbe said to SL10.ng.

''It is not going to be easy, he plays for Germany's Under 20 team. I'll suggest that we offer him something bigger.

''Everything is possible but it won't be easy. His father is from Delta State but grew up in Benin City.''

Though Omodiagbe refused to go straight to the point, it is believed that Kevin Akpoguma will only consider an invitation to play for Nigeria's main squad, the Super Eagles.

The ex Karlsruher SC and FC Bavaria Wörth youth-teamer has clocked up over 40 appearances for Germany's youth teams since his debut in 2011.

@Benue No player is worth begging to play for his country. I see it as disrespectful for the NFF to beg unpatriotic Nigerians when we have wonderful players both home and abroad willing to represent our great country. That's my opinion

@ Crownprince wrong....! Ur absolutely wrong....! We wil never beg anybody to play for Nigeria @ any level. Who told u dt if those players u listed wer born in nigeria dey wnt b a subject matter for discussion here...! R u insinuatin der rnt better talented nigerian born kids....or r u sayin wev not had non nigerians respond @ d 1st call...? D likes of Efan Ekoku, Abbey George, Reuben Agboola, and Semi Ajayi, david alaba n sammy ameobi(all under sam obuh) more recently Bright n courtney dike n leon balogun ddint wait for d whole NASS to com and beg dem in europe n Americas b4 respondin to national call ups. And who told u we begged aluko, odemwinge (den of insurance fc) or Martins to play for nigeria. Most of ds players rnt even 1st teamers in dia various clubs yet n u want us to go beggin dem....? U spoke as if we never achieved anytin in football with home grown players. Who amogst our foreign borns ever got to d height of d likes of Kanu, Okocha, Yakubu, Yobo, Enyeama etc... Dt u now tink we cant be successful without dem. For every Akpoguma or Sidney sam or Owomoyela dt has refusd to play for nigeria.....der r @ least 36 other kids each bak @ home dat can do better dan dem playin on d streets. To Hell wit any kid who wants d entire FA to come begin him to play for ds country @ any level. If u cant make ur way to camp at d 1st time of askin....al d best to u. Even lionel messi ddnt wait for anybody frm argentina to com to barca and beg him b4 joinin up wit d U20s in 2005. We av more dan enof talents @ home yet to b discoverd dan for some spoilt brats to start givin us terms and conditions either now or in d future.

@Dr Drey........ We will continue to beg as long as the country lacks quality youth grooming system. Only a club out of over 100 has a complete academy in Nigeria and that's COD. Imagine if Solanke, Akpoguma, Ilori, Derik, Troost Ekong, Ibe, etc were born in Nigeria, they won't be a subject matter we discuss in on SL10. Begging is the only way we can get better players at the moment. If we didn't approach foreign stars Odewingie, Moses, Martins, Aluko who has contributed immensely to the SE won't be in our cards.

If this young man is waiting for a call up to Super Eagles under keshi then he should focus on Germany because business man keshi wouldn't look his way unless he did the needful.

Manchester City have applied for a work permit for Nigeria youngster Kelechi Iheanacho. Iheanacho has yet to be capped at full international level by Nigeria but he has been capped by his country at U17 and U20 levels and City are most likely to use the special talent argument to get the Home office to grant Iheanacho the right to ply his trade in the UK. It was the same argument that helped Chelsea to give Mikel Obi a contract in 2006 even when by then he was not an established Nigeria international. “City have applied for a work permit for Kelechi this week,” one of the player’s representatives informed “We believe he will be granted the chance to play in England.” Iheanacho was the MVP of last year’s FIFA U17 World Cup, which Nigeria won in fine style with the forward finishing also as the second leading scorer of the tournament. Last week, he was called up by Nigeria U23 team with coach Samson Siasia admitting he is a big fan. He equally shone during City’s pre-season training tour of the United States of America, scoring a couple of goals with class and composure. Iheanacho turned 18 recently and has been training with Major League Soccer (MLS) side Colombus Crew. Earlier this year, City said they may loan out the starlet when he is 18 and can sign a pro deal, but recent reports suggest they may keep him at the Ittihad Stadium.

@chuxinho with all due respect your mentality is part of the problem in Nigerian football. That is why you seem to only support mediocrity.
