#TBT – Remember When Masinga Booked Our Ticket To France In 1998?
Default

It's Thursday, and Supporters Club takes you down memory lane once again. Today, we take you back to the 1998 FIFA World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Congo.

Bafana Bafana needed to win that encounter for them to qualify for what was going to be their first ever participation in the world showpiece, the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France.

The game was played on 16 August 1997 at a fully packed FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. The determination from Bafana Bafana players could be seen when they came out of the tunnel led by their skipper, Neil "Mokoko" Tovey.

The FNB was buzzing and the two teams didn't disappoint. Bafana pushed forward, trying to get a goal from the start. It was in the 16th minute of the game when Chippa Masinga received a pass from Doctor Khumalo and unleashed a thunderbolt from just outside the box into the roof of the net. 1-0 to Bafana, and it stayed that way until half-time.

In the second half, Congo came out firing on all cylinders, but were shut out by a resolute Bafana defence. South Africa regained momentum midway through the second stanza and started asking questions again, but squandered a few goalscoring opportunities.

The referee blew the final whistle at the end of 90 minutes, much to the delight of Bafana coach Clive Barker, who became famous for his airplane goal celebration. The scoreline read: Bafana Bafana 1-0 Congo. South Africa were through to the FIFA World Cup in France the following year (1998).

What memories do you have of that game?

I wish kappa can release a limited edition of that jersey, I would buy it for R1000. This is one team I supported with all my heart.

A day to remember indeed. I'm just thinking just a year before that the same DK served substitute Mark Williams in the afcon final against Tunisia when the score was @ 0-0 the entire 1st half. Mzansi used to have geniuses on the field of play. The last real one I saw in the psl was 'scara' Ngobese. That for me, and a good striker is what we've always lacked.
