THE BREAKDOWN: Who Would Replace Lebese?
George Lebese's Potential Replacement
With Kaizer Chiefs’ winger George Lebese completing his move to Mamelodi Sundowns, we take a look at the possible contingency plans that will put in place, now that he’s at the club.
Lebese has reportedly requested a move away from the club and the Siya crew revealed in Soccer Laduma issue number 1035 that Pitso Mosimane wanted him at Mamelodi Sundowns, which has now turned out to be true. Therefore, Chiefs may have to put a contingency plan in place to ensure that they can succeed after Lebese’s departure. So, we take a look at the statistics and see who the man would be to replace the 28-year-old after his move away.
The man in question was the best scorer and creator in his position last season, scoring four goals and creating the most chances. However, he plays less of a supporting role, and tends to play more as an inside forward, forgoing dribbling by posing as a direct attacking threat, which is why he was capable of producing match winning moments last season.
The former Chippa United man is regarded as a right winger, but is also capable of playing on the left-flank and would stake his claim to the role with his status as exceptional dribbler in the team, only behind Edmore Chirambadare in terms of the existing left sided midfielders.
However, his cross-completion rate leaves a lot to be desired and his shooting accuracy is poor. With 0.87 shot assists per 90 minutes, he seems to lack the necessary creativity and this is likely the reason behind Steve Komphela’s decision to use him mostly as an impact substitution option last season.
The Zimbabwean, like Twala, is an exceptional dribbler and is the best in Chiefs’ entire squad, as per his performances in the league last season. He is left-footed and is naturally suited to the role. Over and above this, he has been good in terms of defensive duties, with exceptional tackling statistics, making almost three per 90 minutes. However, he is not a goal threat and failed to find the net at all last season. With just 20% of his shots coming from inside the box, he lacks the ability to get into dangerous parts of the pitch.
Although “Shabba” has spent the majority of his career prior to last season as a left winger, he played in an attacking midfield, number 10 role and, even when deployed on the wing, tended to play away from the touchline. However, his chance creation and goalscoring ability could make him a valuable player in his natural position, although it is unlikely. For arguments’ sake, however, there is a chance that Steve Komphela will consider him as a candidate.
The new signing played a largely withdrawn role for Maritzburg United last season, which is why his defensive numbers are far better than his peers. However, he simply doesn’t match his competition in attack. With that said, Komphela could opt to change his system to accommodate a left wing-back, which would likely make Zulu the first choice for the role.
It is clear that Lebese has been a key player for Amakhosi over the years and to replace him will not be an easy task. However, Komphela is not short of options and could even look for another player in the transfer market if his star man does leave.
Do you think George Lebese is replaceable? Which player do you think would take over his role now that he’s left the club?
