Morrison's Strike Sends Bucs Second

Absa Premiership Report: Orlando Pirates v Ajax Cape Town 12 September 2017

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 12, 2017 08:20 PM
Absa Premiership

Result: Orlando Pirates 1-0 Ajax Cape Town

Date: 12 September 2017

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Bernard Morrison's first-half goal sealed all three points for Orlando Pirates as they beat Ajax Cape Town 1-0 at Orlando Stadium.

It was a good start to the game from the home side as they knocked the ball around, looking to break the Ajax Cape Town defence but the visitors looked to be holding their shape well at the back.

A well-worked long throw-in allowed Mpho Makola to flick the ball from the near to the far post and found Bernard Morrison who volleyed the Buccaneers into an early 1-0 lead.

Ajax were struggling to deal with the Pirates set pieces and were almost punished again after Makola delivered a quality free kick into the box but Gabuza’s shot was blocked by Mario Booysen to deny Pirates a second goal.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser late in the first half but were unsuccessful as Pirates managed to take their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

A quick counter attack from Orlando Pirates saw the Buccaneers turn defense into attack and they outnumbered the Ajax defense but the final shot was well stopped by Brandon Petersen.

Ajax Cape Town made a few attempts to challenge the Pirates backline but were unable to get a shot on target.

Gabuza on the other hand had no problem in finding the target as his two shots on goal found the back of the net but were both ruled to be offside to the disappointment of the home supporters.

Ajax had a late opportunity denied as a mostly inactive Wayne Sandilands was called to action through a strong header from Tashreeq Morris but the Pirates stopper did well to keep his side in the lead.

The Buccaneers repelled Ajax's late attack to earn a well-deserved 1-0 victory.

Credit to the team and the technical team, the boys played really well last night. Morrison is definitely a player to lookout for this season. I think the Mokoena factor is starting to be apparent in the way we play. I still think that the technical team needs to give Justice Chabalala a run, the boy is a solid defender. The other player that needs to be a part of that starting eleven is Thabiso Kutumela. Maela is proving to be a very valuable part of that squad with an equally good replacement in Marc Van Heerden. Sandilands inspires confidence in that defence, otherwise a great improvement from the way we were playing from last season

Morrison has finally scored his first goal in the 3rd season. I think Kompela will also win his first trophy this season since Morrison has managed to cleanse his curse.

3 points in the bag , but we played in patches , i worry that against the bigger and better sides we might get exposed , pairing jele and nyauza in the heart of defence agains a brockie or tau hmmmmm, asazi anyway it was an okay performance
