Wits Cling To Chiefs & Pirates Target
Jabulani Shongwe Still Has A Year On His Bidvest Wits Contract
His agent may have suggested that he was a free agent, but Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs target, Jabulani Shongwe, still has a year left at Bidvest Wits.
The 27-year-old didn’t play a single Absa Premiership game for the Clever Boys as they won the league in 2016/17 and is clearly not in Gavin Hunt’s plans for the club going forward.
Jazzman Mahlakgane, the player’s representative, told the Siya crew recently that Wits had told him that they will not be renewing his contract, suggesting that he will be available for any club to bring on board ahead of 2017/18.
Mahlakgane said at the time, “We met with the club and what they have done was to assure me that they will not renew or exercise their option on the player’s contract for the coming season.”
However, as reported in the latest issue of Soccer Laduma, an official at Wits has now confirmed that Shongwe does still have one more year left on his contract at the club, meaning that any team interested in signing him would first have to come to an agreement with them.
Shongwe could still leave Wits if a transfer fee or swap deal is agreed, however, Pirates and Chiefs will have to think again if they were hoping to land him on a free.
