Date: 13 August 2017

Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium

Mamelodi Sundowns were knocked out of the MTN8 after suffering a 1-0 loss to Maritzburg United on Sunday afternoon.

The visitors had the first real opening of the game after 13 minutes when an un-marked Pogiso Sanoka headed wide of the upright from six-yards out.

There was a slow tempo for most of the first half, which led to a lack chances on both ends of the field as Kennedy Mweene and Bongani Mpandle endured a quiet opening 30 minutes.

Maritzburg carved out a chance in the 36th minute as Denis Weidlich surged into the box before firing into the side-netting, after some good build-up play.

The visitors then went close to breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute as Mweene kept out Evans Rusike's long range effort, before Sheldon Van Wyk fired over from the rebound.

Sundowns should have gone into the break in the lead but Khama Billiat fired wide of the upright from 12-yards out, following a cross from Thapelo Morena.

The hosts went agonisingly close to taking the lead five minutes into the second half but Thabo Nthethe's header rattled the upright.

Maritzburg took the lead seven minutes later, as Evans Rusike clinically volleyed home from close range following a swift counter attack.

Sundowns could have leveled matters in the 66th minute, but Billiat managed to head wide from six-yards, following some good work by Thapelo Morena.

Pitso Mosimane responded by introducing Oupa Manyisa in the 73rd minute, while Andrea Feliccia came on for Rusike, who was unable to continue.

With 10 minutes remaining, Mosimane threw on George Lebese for his Sundowns debut, as the former Kaizer Chiefs man replaced Billiat.

Sundowns did have chances to level matters in the closing stages, with Kekana blazing over the crossbar from 12-yards out in the 89th minute.

Nevertheless, Maritzburg managed to hold out for the final few minutes to secure their spot in the semi-inals.

Here's how they lined up:

Sundowns: Mweene, Morena, Madisha, Nthethe, Langerman, Vilakazi, Kekana, Billiat, Tau, Zwane, Zakri.

Maritzburg: Mpandle, Fransman, Weidlich, Sanoka, Makaringe, Mekoa, Shandu, Ndlovu, Van Wyk, Maboe, Rusike.

@45calibre Not at all. The most painful moment is to concede 12 goals in two league games, four goals in a final against a small team and not qualify for top 8! Everyone who knows football will agree. Just like in most European leagues, the teams are always fighting for champions league spot but some of them get knocked out in the first round.

I'm happy that Pirates are not in the top 8. At any rate the competition will soon lose its spark as clubs begin to treat it as pre-season tournament. It gives the bucs technical team more chance to prepare the team for the long road ahead.
