John Comitis Comments On MTN8 Final Venue
Cape Town City chairman, John Comitis says that with regards to the venue set for the MTN8 final, he wants both his side and SuperSport United to get on a flight to reach their destination, avoiding a repetition of last year’s circumstances.
City and SuperSport locked horns in the final of the 2016 Telkom Knockout competition in December last year, which was held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, a closer travelling distance for Matsatsantsa than the Mother City-based club.
Now, the two sides will meet in yet another cup final in the MTN8 competition, however, Chairman Comitis maintains that whichever venue is chosen to host the final, both City and SuperSport need to be travelling for the encounter.
“One thing that I have made very clear, right at the outset is if I get on to a flight to get to a stadium, SuperSport better be getting on to a flight to get to that same stadium. I don’t want to be in that situation where they took a two-hour bus ride a day before the game and we had to fly up and drive up on an eight-hour round trip from start to end and then compete,” Comitis told media on Monday, September 11.
The chairman also revealed that he will try to propose the idea of having the final at the Cape Town Stadium, as he is confident that there will be up to 40 thousand spectators at the stadium.
“So that is my base that I work from, I think if you want to get 35-40 thousand people to the final, bring it to Cape Town. But we will have to ask SuperSport to concede that one, you never know. But, I do believe that we will get 35-40 thousand people, I really believe that it happened once before when Ajax almost won the league, they had one game to go and they had 34 thousand people at the stadium just for one game. But, Capetonians come out for a worthy cause, so it is worth a shot to try and get it,” he said.
An official announcement about the date, time and venue of the MTN8 final is set to be made on Thursday, September 14.
