Ex-Bafana Stars In Running For Baxter, Benni Out
Some Ex-Bafana Players Are In Line As Stuart Baxter's Assistant
Former Bafana Bafana stars, Quinton Fortune and Shaun Bartlett, are in the running to be Stuart Baxter’s assistant, as was Benni McCarthy until recently.
Baxter, who is still hopping between Bafana and SuperSport United at present, is yet to decide on who he wants to be his assistant coach within the national team setup, although it appears that he’s keen to bring in somebody with whom he’s worked before.
Both Fortune and Bartlett played for the Englishman during his first stint at South Africa between 2004 and 2005 and they are both now in the running for a spot as his number two as Baxter takes aim at the 2018 World Cup and 2019 African Cup of Nations.
Fortune is currently free having left Cardiff City’s U21s in 2015, while Bartlett is still the head coach of National First Division outfit, University of Pretoria.
The Siya crew have been informed that new Cape Town City coach, Benni McCarthy, was also a candidate for the position before he took over his first head coaching job in the Mother City. Aaron Mokoena’s name has also been mentioned.
With the COSAFA Cup and Chan qualifiers against Botswana coming up next month, Baxter will no doubt want to finalise his technical team as soon as possible and while Thabo Senong will stay on with the U20s, there is expected to be a new face or two.
It remains to be seen who will be brought on board by Baxter and at this point, nothing has been finalised.
