EPL Player: Why I Snubbed Bafana Call-Up

Premier League Player: Why I Snubbed Bafana Bafana Call-Up

By Kurt Buckerfield - Jul 13, 2017 11:40 AM @KurtLaduma

A Premier League midfielder, who is eligible to represent Bafana Bafana, has revealed why he turned down his international call-up in 2012.

SA Teen Lands Pro EPL Deal

Andrew Surman, who last played for Bournemouth in England, was born in Johannesburg in 1986 but moved to Southampton nine years later.

The midfielder, who has played for Southampton, Walsall, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Norwich City and Bournemouth since he moved abroad, was called up to Bafana in 2012 but turned down the opportunity.

Surman has now talked about why he chose not to play for South Africa at the time, saying that club football has always been a priority.

“I have never ruled out playing for South Africa but my priority has always been my club football. The past two or three years have been hugely important for me,” he told English publication the Daily Echo.

“If I had gone to play international football things might not have worked out the same way.

“I was really honoured to be called up and it certainly was not something I turned up my nose at. I really, seriously, considered it.

“But I have a young family and international football is a big commitment.”

Surman is now a free agent after Bournemouth decided not to offer the 30-year-old a new contract.

2012 is a long time ago man, there really is no use explaining himself now . He's old and clubless, so needs to focus on his family and finding a team to play for, he's just a cow.
