Reports: Neymar Told Friends Which Award He Wants To Beat Lionel Messi To
FC Barcelona superstar Neymar is not often viewed as the club's main man in the presence of Lionel Messi, but the Brazilian has now reportedly told his friends of his ambition to beat the Argentine to a certain award.
The Selecao star was among the final three nominees for the 2016 FIFA The Best Player award, but finished in third place behind his teammate and winner Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 25-year-old has improved massively since joining the Catalan giants in 2013, but many believe he has to leave the Camp Nou in order to step out of Messi's shadow.
According to Don Balon, Neymar wants to beat his teammate and Ronaldo to the highest individual accolade in football, and has told his close friends of this ambition.
Neymar was the Man of the Match in Barcelona's superb 6-1 comeback win over Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League last week, scoring two goals and assisting another two strikes.
He even outshone Messi, who was often marked by multiple opponents and struggled to have an impact on the game.
Overall, Neymar has scored 14 goals and assisted another 21 strikes in 34 club appearances this season.
While 30-year-old Messi and 32-year-old Ronaldo may struggle to keep up their glorious goalscoring records as age takes its toll on them, Neymar will surely be one of the main contenders to end their World Player of the Year/Ballon d'Or reign.
Ronaldo and Messi have battled each other for the top individual accolades since 2009, with Messi winning the highest personal prize five times and Ronaldo four.
