Messi The First Footballer To Earn These Wages?

Lionel Messi The First Footballer To Earn These Wages?

By Kurt Buckerfield - Jul 11, 2017 06:45 PM @KurtLaduma

FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi recently committed his future to the Catalan club. Is he the first footballer in history to earn these kinds of wages?

5 Players Barca Have Failed To Sign So Far

The club recently announced that the Argentine had put pen to paper on a new deal in Spain, which will keep him at the club until 2021.

While a release clause of £263m was said to have been inserted into his contract, it is also reported that he will earn £1m a week (R17 million a week) at Barca for the next four years.

The Sunday Times claims no other player in the world has ever earned that much in basic wages, with the 30-year-old now reportedly the highest paid star in football.

Chelsea Turn To African Talisman?

It was recently reported that Carlos Tevez is the highest-earning footballer, though Messi is now believed to have overtaken his countryman.

Do you think it is fair that footballers are paid these mega salaries? Let us know in the comments section below.
