Why Aguero Might Not Want Messi To Join Him At City
Default

With rumours linking Lionel Messi with Manchester City, Sergio Aguero was quoted as saying that he would love to see his Argentina teammate and friend at the Etihad. But can you guess why that sentiment might not be entirely true?

For those invested, it would seem that upon rising every morning, the first thing that they do is check to see whether or not Messi has signed a new contract with the Blaugrana, and each day that he hasn't, the reports linking him with a move to England become more believable.

So much so that the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's international teammate Aguero was asked whether or not he would be interested in seeing his fellow Argentine at the Etihad next season. To which City's No. 10, according to Sky Sports, responded by saying: "I would love to have Leo on my team, but that seems quite complicated".

Yes, it would certainly be quite complicated – for Aguero, especially. The arrival of Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus brought with it endless rumours that he was manager Pep Guardiola's intended centre forward and that Aguero would slowly be phased out. However, it seems his amazing form and favour with the City faithful has made it difficult to keep the former Golden Boot winner out of the team.

However, the arrival of Messi would certainly shift the spotlight from "Kun", along with his "golden boy" status at the club. The 29-year-old already has to deal with being in Messi's shadow for his national side, it might not sit well with his ego to again be reduced to the bit-player role in the Messi show at club level too. In fact, many believe that it was this exact sentiment that lead to Neymar’s departure from the Catalan giants.

This could also make it a lot easier for Guardiola to continue his rumoured plan of moving the striker out of the club, and as the player is approaching 30, he may not be as appealing in the market as 25-year-old Neymar was, despite his incredible skill.

A player of Aguero's calibre certainly deserves to be the star man of a team, as he currently is, so it's hard to believe he would be entirely thrilled to see his countryman sporting City's light blue come next season.

If you were Aguero, would you like to see Messi at the Etihad next season?
